Onto the Florida Swing! First up, the Honda Classic!

The PGA Tour is done with the West Coast swing and we move East to start the Florida swing. We kick it off with the Honda Classic at PGA National in South Florida.

I love the Florida swing because it’s always the weekend where we transition from February to March. The weather starts to get nice and we start to get a peek at AugustaNational. This year, March got even better because we have the Players Championship March 14th – 17th. Awesome, awesome, awesome golf ahead of us.

Let’s look at the Honda Classic this week;

History:

Ok, we all know what happened at Honda Classic last year. My boy JT won the “hardo of year” award by kicking that fan out because he screamed, “get in the bunker.” I get it, we all get it, and he has come out and apologized for his actions. I respect for JT for owning up to it, and can’t imagine how hard it is competing on PGA tour. Especially trying to close out a big tournament on Sunday.

Now that that’s cleared up. Check out JT’s highlights of his win last year. This was an awesome finish as JT battled Luke List in a 1 hole playoff. JT hit a huge 2nd shot into 18 to seal the deal.

In 2017, we saw Rickie Fowler win after an awesome display of golf. This was a big win for Rickie because it came after the anonymous ESPN survey which labeled him as one of the most overrated players on tour….NOT TRUE

If we go WAY WAY WAY back to 2012, we can’t forget when Tiger hit this shot into 18 to seal the deal.

The Course:

All we need to focus on is The Bear Trap. The 15th, 16th, and 17th hole are labeled as the hardest closing holes in golf. God forbid there is wind, I don’t think anyone in the field can go under par on these 3 holes. This is a huge reason why the tournament is so hard to win. Coming down the stretch, these holes demand so much attention that it’s so easy to make a mistake. I mean look what happened to Adam Scott in 2016…

One aspect of this golf course is that the fans love to see these guys struggle. It makes the game so relatable to the everyday Saturday/Sunday golfer. This course will definitely do that…

The Field

We were very spoiled by the WGC event in Mexico. This week we return to a regular PGA field. Honestly, not too strong of a field. Besides JT and Koepka, I do not see Rory, Tiger, DJ, Spieth, etc. With the Players Championship around the corner, it is probably a big rest week for them.

Predictions:

Score: This is a hard golf course and the win is expected to blow in Palm Beach. I see -11 winning this event.

Winner: Justin Thomas. He fired a HUGE 62 last Sunday and is HOT coming into this event. Also, PGA National is essentially a home course for him. I could see him repeating this week. I’m praying we see a battle between Keopka and JT on Sunday

Dark Horse: Daniel Berger. Another Florida resident that knows how to play well down there.
