WGC Mexico Championship – Preview

From the Pacific Palisades down the coast to Mexico City for the first World Golf Championship! We are headed to Mexico where the top 50 players in the world will battle it out for HUGE FedEx and World Golf Ranking points.

History at Doral:

So last year was the first year we saw this tournament move from Trump Doral in Miami to Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City. I understand why they made the decision, but I loved Doral so much. Miami had such an awesome buzz every year and the Blue Monster is such an awesome track. That being said, let’s share some moments from when the first WGC event was played at Doral.

First, the legendary Rory….

Second, young Tiger Woods driving par 4 16th hole.

Finally an absolute monster of an 18th hole. One of the hardest finishing holes in golf.

Doral - 18thHole

History at Mexico:

We saw an awesome tournament last year. If you remember, JT had that awesome final round where he eagled par 4 18th to get in a playoff with Phil. Ultimately, Phil outlasted JT  on the second playoff to end a 5-year winless streak!!!!

The Course:

The Club de Golf Chapultepec is a top 100 course in Mexico.  The course was designed by a Scotsman named Willie Smith. He moved across the pond from Scotland to design and build this golf course. Unfortunately, Smith died before the course was finished and his brother Alex (great name) finished the design in 1921.

The course is a par 72 and stretches to 7267 yards from the tips. The most unique part about this golf course is how the altitude affects the yardage.  The course is built 1.36 miles above sea level. Hense, this is why DJ hit a 2 iron last year to a 370-yards last year. The guys are going to absolutely murder the golf ball. BYE BYE Ball…

The Field:

The field is absolutely stacked this week. These events almost remind me of a major championship because we are dealing with the top 50 players in the world. Top names include JT, Spieth, Fleetwood, Woods, Johnson, Keopka, etc.

Since this is a WGC, there is a big international presence as well. Aaron Rai, Haotong Li, Sang-Hyun Park, Shubhankar Sharma, Abraham Sterne, Lucas Bjerregaard….Who are these guys??????

Winner: Justin Thomas. I don’t mean to bet the house here but I think he is playing way too good not to take.

Score: -18. The boys will be hitting the ball a long, long, LONG way. Expect a lot of drivers and wedges.

Dark Horse: Kevin Kisner. GO HEAD KISNER. Watch him play well this week.

Final Thoughts:

This is hilarious! DJ making this girl wet her pants with a simple wave. Someone put this girl in protective custody. God only knows what Paulina will do once she sees this…
