It’s here! WM Phoenix Open

It’s finally here! We move from California to the desert of Phoenix, Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. There is no need to downplay this tournament because it’s absolutely NUTS. Literally a frat house was built around the 16th to house 20,000 screaming, drunk fans.Β  Let’s dive in a look at this week’s preview.

First, lets take a look at the top 5 memorable moments at the TPC Scottsdale:

The History:

Number 5. Tiger roped driver into desert. Legit, ended up front in front of a 200lb rock. Luckily, that’s a movable object!

Number 4. Tiger shoots 82 in his first round back. Clearly showing more signs of back pain and now has the “chip yips”. Please watch highlight with caution. It’s actually horrible.

Number 3.Β  Francesco Molinari dunks an ace and the crowd goes absolutely NUTS.

Number 2. Rickie Fowler blows 2 shot lead heading into par-4Β  17th. Ended up losing to Matsuyama in four hole sudden death playoff.

Number 1. It speaks for itself. The GOAT.

The Course :

TPC Scottsdale was opened 33 years ago in 1987. The 36 hole golf compound was built by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The Waste Management Open is always played on The Stadium course which features the dynamic 16th hole.

The Field:

Very electric field this week as a majority of the guys try and make this a regular spot. Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Kisner (GOAT), Phil Mickelson, John Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Fowler, Webb Simpson, etc. Honestly, you would think this tournament would get a lot more traction with bigger names such as: DJ, Rory, Keopka, but I think the 16th hole draws them away from this event.

Winning Score – If ball striking permits, you can go VERY low here. Winning scores have previously been in -20 and lower. With the field being more competitive this year, I think we will see -23 wins it.

Winner – Gary Woodland. He won it last year and the guy is quietly one of 5 hottest players in the world right now.

Dark Horse – I have two dark horses this week. First,Β  JB Holmes. Hear me out. JB bombs the ball and this course sets up very well for longer hitters. If he is driving the ball well, he will have a great shot. My other dark horse is Martin Laird. Since 2011, he has had 10 top ten finishes here. Also, having a very good start to 2019.
