As the sun was setting on Torrey Pines, Justin Rose was hoisting his new trophy after winning the Farmers Insurance Open with a -21. However, just like the TOUR Championship last September, all eyes were on Tiger Woods.
Woods finished tied for 20th with a -10. The week started with a lot of promise for Woods and his fans, but after a relatively slow start, he was all but out of contention after his Friday round. Although there were many parts of Tiger’s game that were dialed in, there were a few too many missed opportunities to put him in contention on Sunday’s final round.
Even though Tiger was not in a position to make moves on the weekend, he seemed to be pleased with his performance in his first PGA TOUR event of 2019. After posting a 67 on Sunday Woods said he liked the progress he made throughout the week. “If you look at where I was Thursday and look at where I am now, Sunday, I got a little bit better. I drove the ball better, hit my irons a little bit cleaner. Again, I hit some good putts, some didn’t go in, some did. Just continue with the track. I have a couple more months of prep before April, so things are heading in the right direction.”
My expectations were high coming into the week, and although I was disappointed that I didn’t get to add another signature Tiger moment to the memory bank, I will never get tired of seeing Tiger in his Sunday best posting scores in the 60’s. I fully expect Tiger to find more greens and find something with his putting stroke that will put him back in the final groups on Sundays.
And for the record, his shirt was red.
