Joey Garber (who smoked me in Highschool Golf) shoots 1-over 71 in the first round of the Sony Open

I’m scrolling through the Sony Open leaderboard this morning and see Joey Garber’s name. Joey isn’t a household name but I am used to him being at the top of leaderboards. He grew up in Petoskey, Michigan a short trip from my home town of Traverse City. Our high schools were in the same conference and our teams competed against each other 8-10 times. I say “teams” because I wasn’t competitive with him. He was a senior setting course records/shooting low 60s and I was a freshman trying to make more pars then bogeys. Years later it’s awesome to see him playing well on the PGA Tour.

Garber won the 2018 REX Hospital Open on the Tour and the $117,000 paycheck that came with it. The victory combined a few more top finishes to close out the regular season, Garber finished in the top 25 on the money list and earned his PGA Tour card. In round 1 of the Sony Open, he hit 14 of 18 greens and finished at 1 over. Check out his card below:
